Face Shapes: Round Example

Filipina actress Judy Ann Santos is a good example of a round face. Her cheeks are wider than her forehead and jawline. Her chin is rounded. You have probably seen some of her billboards and got awestruck seeing how pretty she looked in those pictures. If there's one celebrity I want to do make up on, it's her.

Although she has slimmed down dramatically from tae bo sessions, her makeup adds even more sexy points. With the right contouring and highlighting of her features, she turns into a traffic- halting babe. Makeup artists Chechel Joson and Juan Sarte are among those geniuses who worked their magic on her.

Face Shapes, What to Highlight and Contour

Knowing how to do makeup doesn't mean you get to apply the same formula to all clients. Getting acquainted with the different face shapes will guide you how to deal with your client's features and know which areas to contour and highlight.

These are the general categories of face shapes:

1. Round

Drew Barrymore

A round face is nearly as wide as it is long. The cheeks are full, which is the widest area of the face. The forehead and chin are rounded.

What To contour:

  • temples

  • cheeks: suck in the cheeks and find the hollows. sweep a darker shade into the hollows and down to the chin line

  • jawline What to highlight: - forehead - underneath the eyes above the cheekbones, blend upwards

  • center of the chin

2. Square

Isabella Rosellini

The forehead, cheeks and jaw have the same width.

What to contour:
- temples
- apples of the cheeks to help draw away attention from the corners of the square and make it appear more oval
- jawline

What to highlight:
- forehead
- underneath the eyes
- tip of the chin

3. Heart- Shaped

Jennifer Love Hewitt

Forehead is wide which tapers to a pointed or narrow chin, like an inverted triangle

What to contour:
- temples
- cheeks

What to highlight:
- chin, to broaden it
- jawline
- underneath the eyes, just above the cheekbones to draw attention to the center of the face

4. Oval

Tyra Banks

The forehead is wider than the chin . The cheeekbones are prominent and face narrows gently downwards from the cheeks. The length of the face is greater than its width, around 1 and 1/2 times. It usually needs no contouring and highlighting as this is considered to be the ideal shape, but you can play with it.

What to contour:

  • apples of the cheeks and along the cheekbones

  • temples

What to highlight:

  • above the cheekbones near the outer corner of the eye

5. Long

Leelee Sobieski
This face is long and thin with a more pointed chin. Similar to an oval face but with higher cheekbones and high forehead.

What to contour:
- hairline
- lower cheeks
- chin

What to highlight:
- temples
- above the cheekbones

Natasha Mills, The Chameleon

She is one very important model in my stint as a make up artist. When I got back to CDO after my hair and makeup schooling in Manila, I was ecstatic to know that I will be working with her for my first shoot in the city. Along with ace photographer Dustein Sibug, it was a powerhouse of a team I was so proud to have collaborated with.

Natasha just won the 2nd runner up title of Miss Kagay-an 2007 when I met her. Her British descent and twang could mistake her as an intimidating presence. On the contrary, she's a very pleasant person to get to know. Goofy and outspoken, Natasha Mills is much more than what her dynamic poses tell us.

Up Close and Personal
Natasha is a stunning 18 year old who hails from South London, England. Born to a Filipino Mom and British Dad on August 17, 1989, she moved to CDO almost 3 years ago to study. She is currently an HRM sophomore in one of the prestigious universities in the city. If her face looks familiar to you, that's because she has graced billboards for her alma mater. She was also part of her school's TV commercial.

The Chameleon
She started modeling in England for SKALLYWAGS children modeling agency. Her career in the Philippines took off after winning in Ms. Kagay-an Tourism last year. The 5 finalists had a fashion photoshoot. After then, it was master lensman Dustein Sibug who noted her potentials and invited her to more fashion pictorials. Her outstanding skills and professionalism brought her more projects from as far as Cebu, for Dustein's workshops. The photographers loved her ability to transform, setting different looks and moods that the cameras loved to play with. Hence, gaining herself the title of the chameleon.

Modeling Is Her Passion
Despite the scorching heat of the sun or the heavy pour of rain, nothing stops Natasha from giving her best as a model. She embraces modeling with so much fun and passion that you will not hear a single complaint from her when working, even in the most adverse environment. Just fill her up with a C2 Lemon drink or a hot choco on a cold day, and her energy will keep soaring til you drop. Definitely no prima donna, this lady.

Fashion Icon
She would wear anything that Jennifer Lopez would wear, sexy but elegant. That explains the Chuck Taylor heels she once wore in our shoot. When she saw JLo in similar shoes, she didn't hesitate getting the pair she eyed at Limketkai Mall.

Natasha, the Makeup Diva

There's this other side to her that not many people know, her talent in makeup. She has penchant for L'oreal and Maybelline cosmetics and Bourjois eyeshadows. The other contestants of Miss Kagay-an were glad to have Natasha around. Her skills were put to good use in making her competitors look as glamorous as her when they were pressed against time.

When she isn't satisfied with her makeup during shoots, she revises them herself. Luckily, she has not changed any of my works but she does suggest colors and tricks which she thinks would help pull off the look better. There's a lot more pressure in doing makeup for someone who knows the art but I find it actually helpful to have someone who can give opinion on what I'm doing. Getting her thumbs up mean a lot to me.

Beauty Secrets
How does one achieve a beautiful face like hers? She shares that a smile is the most inexpensive beauty tool. "Enjoy your blessings in life. Take care of your skin and body," she adds.

Wanna be A Model like her?
This is what she advises women who want to give modeling a shot, "study... study modeling, study good strong poses, study emotions in your face...study your eyes- photographers love it when they see a story behind them. Be aware of your attitude, you shouldn't get a big head just because you got many calls for upcoming shoots. Beauty isn't just on the outside but the inside too," quips the humble chameleon.

UDPP

In makeup speak, that's Urban Decay Primer Potion. Raves for this magical product made me give in, eventually. It promised to prevent the eyeshadow colors from creasing and help to make it last longer, maintaining its vibrant look. Hands down, it won me over.

We had a photoshoot last Sunday with our very beautiful model, Nicole. They wanted a nature theme of the pictorial with bold, bordering on neon colors for makeup. Midway between natural and bold, I settled for yellow green eyeshadows. However, my Mac eye colors were mostly neutrals. I had to rely on my elianto palette which contained the color I had in mind. Although elianto colors are highly pigmented, I was worried on the longevity of
the makeup. I started the makeup at around 8:30 AM and the shoot went on til late afternoon.

Amazingly, the UDPP delivered its promise. The eyeshadows were still striking despite that I only retouched it in mid afternoon. No creases, either. This works well on oily lids which tends to let the colors slip off faster.

Here's how to apply the magic potion:
  • Apply a very thin coat of this and spread evenly. Allow to dry. Apply eyeshadow as you normally would.

Some complained that it is harder to apply eyeshadow with UDPP as base. That's because it doesn't dry up to a powdery consistency, making it bumpier for the eyeshadows to glide. To counter this, you have to make sure you spread UDPP evenly and thinly. A little goes a long way. A good makeup brush should be handy.

In addition, if you plan on revising the original color, you may have difficulty removing it once it adheres to the UDPP.
You may have to use a makeup remover for this and repeat the
process.

This sells for $16. Other eye primers getting the rave but I have
yet to try are Art deco eye primer and Too faced eye insurance.
The former is sold in Manila but I heard, it's always out of stock.
Hmm.. It must be that hot.

Note: The official pictures of that photoshoot are still to be released. The photos that appear here were poor captures from my cell phone cam.

Highlight and Contour 101

Applying these 2 concepts on the right places will prevent your face from looking flat on photos. The idea of accentuating and concealing will be largely dependent on how well you can highlight and contour.

These are two essential principles in makeup artistry:

Contour- gives the illusion of depth. A darker shade gives your features more depth and definition by mimicking shadows. This is usually applied to areas you want to recede.

Examples of areas commonly contoured:
sides of the nose
cheeks
eye creases
any prominent feature you want to downplay (jawlines, chin, etc)

Highlight- the opposite of contour. A lighter shade is usually needed to achieve a highlighting effect. Highlighted areas protrude and helps draw attention to the specific area or feature.

Examples of areas commonly highlighted :
cheekbones
browbone
bridge of the nose

To illustrate:
78th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Areas of Jennifer Lopez' face that are contoured:

Cheeks- to define the hollows of the cheeks and for a more sculpted look
Nose- even if you have a well-chiseled nose like JLo, contouring the side of your nose is will prevent strong lights from making your nose look wider.
Eye creases- the smokey eyeshadow gives strong contrast to the neutral shades on the rest of the face.

Areas of Jennifer Lopez' face that are highlighted:

Browbones- this defines the arch of the eyebrow and opens up the eyes
Under the eyes- for a fresher and brighter look
Cheekbones- to make it appear higher and add glow to the area
Bridge of the nose- to add contrast to the contour on the sides.

In Style: Hippie headbands

Ashlee Simpson and Vanessa Hudgens are strutting the hippie way. These are thin bands in braided or beaded pattern tied around the head. Suit yourself to where it flatters you: mid- forehead or a little upwards. Whether you wear the garter from your old underwear, shred your old shirt to pieces or get these from your favorite vintage store, you gotta groove it, girl! Thinner is better, unless you're going for the Andre Agassi 80's look.

Color Schemes

Here are some more examples of the color schemes following yesterday's lesson on color theory:

Monochromatic- Angelina Jolie keeps her makeup subdued with a monochromatic blend of browns in varying intensities. Even her lipstick is a tint of brown.
Photo from People

Analogous- Green and Yellow lie next to each other on the color wheel. The addition of pink gives the complimentary twist to green.

Complementary. Green compliments pink which is a tint of red. Green is directly opposite red in the colorwheel.
Photo from Barbie Love Mac Collection at Maccosmetics.com

Triadic- The Colors on her eyes yellow and blue, plus the red lips are in equal distances from one another.

Tetradic- Using double complementary colors: Blue-Orange, Violet-Yellow.

Color Theory

A very basic concept in makeup artistry or any form of art, is the color theory. Understanding the principles will help you know what colors make a good combination for the look you're driving at.

Let's go back to basics and revisit the color wheel.

The Primary Colors are those colors that can't be produced by mixing 2 other colors: Red, Yellow and Blue.

The Secondary Colors are colors created by mixing 2 of the primary colors:
Green= yellow + blue
Orange= yellow + red
Violet= red + blue

The Tertiary or Intermediate colors are achieved by mixing an adjacent primary and secondary color in equal amounts
Chartreuse= Yellow + Green
Turquoise= Green + Blue
Plum= Violet + Red

Black and White are not considered as colors. In fact, Black is the absence of light. All the wavelengths of light are absorbed, which means there is no reflection of light or color. White, on the other hand, is the total reflection of lights, wavelengths and colors. Gray is produced by mixing black and white.

Color Value

Tint- higher color value. any color plus white
example: red + white= pink; thus pink is a tint of red
Shade- lower color value. any color plus black.
example: red + black= burgundy; thus burgundy is a shade of red.

Color Combinations

These are the schemes on the color wheel
Photobucket

1. Monochromatic- one color with variation of lightness or darkness.
example: pink, red, burgundy

2. Analogous- colors that lie next to each other in the color wheel
example: red, red-orange, orange

3. Triadic- three colors that are of equal distances on the color wheel
example: green, violet, orange

4. Complementary- two colors directly oppsite of each other
examples: red-green, orange-blue, yellow-violet
When complementary colors are placed one on top of the other, it neutralizes. When beside each other, the effect is intensified.

5. Tetradic- are any four colors with a logical relationship on the color wheel, such as double complements. Example is the scheme I chose on my model, using 2 pairs of complementary colors: Blue- Orange and Yellow- Violet.

Aspirin Mask

Among the common DIY remedies, aspirin mask has gained quite a massive following due to its reported effectiveness in battling the perennial problem of acne.

Medical uses of aspirin aka acetylsalicylicacid include anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic effects and the prevention of blood clotting. The anti-inflammatory reaction is most likey responsible for shrinking zits and decreasing their redness. Salicylic acid, a metabolite of aspirin is known as a keratolytic that sloughs off the epidermis more readily. This prevents the pores from clogging.

I have tried a modified version of the aspirin mask by mixing it with my astringent and applying it on the affected areas. I don't know if the astringent will destroy the potent properties of the tablet but I do notice a decrease in the erythematous appearance of the pimple afterwards.

Here is the classic way of preparing the aspirin mask:

  • Choose lightly/noncoated tablets of aspirin ( coated formulations are made to prevent the irritant effects on the gastric wall)

  • Get 3-5 tablets of Aspirin and dissolve it in distilled water, just enough to work a creamy consistency.

  • Apply it on a clean, dry skin. Focus on the affected areas and the oily zone of your face.

  • After drying, scrub it off with a clean, slightly moist cotton pad, in small circular motion.

  • Do this 2-3x a week and gradually taper when skin improves. For dry and sensitive skin, lessen the frequency.

A moisturizer will aid in lessening the drying effects of this procedure. Variations are done by replacing water with honey, yogurt or facial cleansers. I have yet to try these but they are said to flake off less than aspirin with water.

Be careful not to apply this very near the eye because the skin surrounding that area is very delicate and sensitive.

This is an inexpensive answer to your acne problems but don't be tempted to overuse it. It may be drying in the long term so be cautious. This is a quick fix but doesn't guarantee that you acne will be gone forever.

Until the next beauty tip!

Suesh Make Up Brushes

I got my Suesh 28- piece make up brush set last January, just in time for my 3rd wedding gig.

The first time I heard about Suesh was through the August edition of Preview magazine last year (the same issue where Makeup Artist in Scrubs was featured in the Nokia N76 promo winners). The price of P2,500 for a 16 piece set was reasonable enough. It looked very professional. It was tempting but I brushed it aside ( pun intended) because I wasn't sure about the quality based on the magazine feature alone. When I enrolled in a make up school, my classmate Sharon showed me her suesh 28 piece brushes and I made a mental note to buy one for myself soon.

It took a while to get my hands on my very own suesh brush set because the 28 piece set was always out of stock. It was selling like hotcakes.

These are 5 top reasons why I instantly fell in love with it:

  1. They are luxuriously sooffft! I have encountered brushes that were very affordable yet double as face exfoliants. The abrasive nature of these cheap brushes irritates the skin and causes blemishes. Suesh brushes are soft enough to be therapeutic to the skin. When I first got it, I couldn't stop sweeping it on my palm.

  2. Effective delivery of pigments. The difference of natural fibers like those of suesh's from soft synthetic brushes is the presence of scales. These hold the pigments and transfer it to your skin when applied.

  3. No shedding. Even for some expensive brushes, they leave fibers on your face, sometimes ample enough to mistake you as garfield's girlfriend. Suesh does not give you this problem.

  4. Sturdy. These brushes will last you for a long, long time due to the quality craftmanship.

  5. Reasonable price. For good quality brushes, Suesh is the real deal! Branded brushes could cost as much as P3,000 per brush, yet with P4,500, you can already have Suesh full 28 piece professional set. It's a very wise investment.

Prior to purchasing these brushes, I bought their tool belt for P1,000.00. It affords me the convenience of having my brushes around all the time during photo shoots.

For make up junkies who want the basics, they also have 5 piece brush set for only P900. This would make a nice present for your kikay friends or your mom. I wish somebody gave me a gift like this but it never happened. By the way, watch out for the Cosmopolitan Philippines August 2008 Edition. The 5 piece suesh set landed on their cosmo beauty awards.
Other items that Suesh has are:

  • Kabuki brush- P700

  • Retractable blush brush- P600

  • Foundation Brush- P700

  • Stippling brush- P900

Their website is at: http://suesh.multiply.com or you could contact them at 09178942625 or 09226038087. Don't worry, the ladies behind Suesh are absolutely nice, they don't bite.
